FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Grenada, MS – May 30, 2024- One year ago, a tragic incident unfolded in Indianola, Mississippi, when an 11-year-old boy was shot by Officer Capers of the Indianola Police Department. The Carlos Moore Law Group has taken action by filing a lawsuit against the City of Indianola and Officer Capers on behalf of the victims, seeking accountability and justice in the face of negligence, assault, battery, and emotional distress.
In the early hours of May 20, 2023, NaKala Murry, fearing for her and her children’s safety, called the police for help. Officer Capers arrived on the scene with his firearm drawn, leading to a devastating outcome as he shot Plaintiff A.M., causing severe injuries including a collapsed lung, lacerated liver, and fractured ribs. The lawsuit alleges that Officer Capers failed to assess the situation properly before using lethal force, resulting in irreparable harm to the young victim.
Carlos E. Moore, managing partner of the Carlos Moore Law Group, issued the following statement: “This incident underscores the urgent need for proper training and supervision within law enforcement agencies. The gross negligence and reckless disregard displayed by the City of Indianola and its police force have had devastating consequences for this innocent family. We are committed to seeking justice and ensuring that such tragedies do not recur.”
While the state case moves forward, the federal case remains in progress as part of the ongoing legal process. Carlos Moore Law Group represents another victim in a separate, independent case involving the Indianola Police Department and Officer Capers, reinforcing the need for accountability and reform within the department.
Amidst numerous incidents of police misconduct across Mississippi and the nation, Attorney Carlos Moore reaffirms his dedication to addressing systemic issues of abuse of authority by law enforcement. The Carlos Moore Law Group stands ready to advocate for victims of police misconduct, striving to promote accountability and justice in communities affected by such actions.
As the community reflects on the anniversary of this heartbreaking event, the Carlos Moore Law Group urges all stakeholders to join in the call for reform within the Indianola Police Department to prevent future tragedies and uphold the principles of justice and integrity.
